Wildlife in our backyard

This is part of our extended family. For those of you that live in the outskirts of a city it may be usual, but we live in the middle of a city. As a matter of fact, we can drive 20 km south on Yonge St. to reach the lake or 30 km north to Newmarket all in a densely built and populated urban area. So, we enjoy the surrounding wildlife, especially when it happens in our own backyard.

Racoons are now city creatures. So are the chipmunks, squirrels and the skunks and the many resident or migratory birds. But occasionally we get surprised by an opossum or a muskrat and even a fox or a coyote. During the summer we share our crops with them.

Squirrels are interested in the raspberries and digging up our garden, the bunnies will eat everything in the winter and early spring, so we have to fence off our sorrel. But then they will move to the garden clover and try a few low-hanging raspberries for dessert. Racoons although nocturnal are day-curious too, especially the babies. They tramp through the tomatoes hanging low out of the fenced area, but are not impressed. And the birds of course are everywhere.

The goldfinches are extremely camera shy. The grey jays always keep their distance, but the blue jays, robins and cardinals are quite friendly. I think they know us by name. As do the chipmunks. So we decided to share some of our photos in this gallery. Enjoy!

Note: The images, mostly taken with phones and generally not great, had to be downsized to fit with new WordPress requirements. We have not been able to resolve this issue with them.
