Crossing the Arctic Circle and a border

In the quiet after Christmas Eve, neighbours gathering (shh, it was my birthday and although unannounced most knew it) and sending off the full of adventures old 2025 year, Alex managed to finish another video from our Scandinavian trip.

After 18 days since we crossed from Sweden to Norway way up above the arctic circle it is time to say goodbye to Oslo and Norway with our last stop in Malmö Sweden. Continue reading “Malmö Sweden”

Oslo is our last stop in Norway. Our home is an Airbnb apartment with a bedroom, a living room and kitchenette located a historic working-class district named Grünerløkka or Løkka as the local call it. Continue reading “Chasing The Scream in Oslo”

From Bergen to Oslo via Flåm

Tue, Jun 24

After a big delay here is the next post from our Scandinavian trip – Flåm.

Bergen saw us off with its usual gloom, rain and cold. Continue reading “From Bergen to Oslo via Flåm”

Stockholm June 2025

After a 6 months delay, here is Alex’s first video from our June trip to Scandinavia. If no other major issues with his or our house health, he may be able to pull one more of the hat before our winter 2026 travels. Fingers crossed.

Bergen

Fry, Jun 20

Bergen, with about 294 000 people, the second most populous city in Norway after Oslo, is also the wettest Norwegian city. It also is the rainiest city in Europe. Continue reading “Bergen”

Trondheim

Storyline: Scandinavia

Wed, Jun 18

We love Trondheim. Trondheim, the Viking capital along the river.

Arrived late last night after about 10 hours of spectacular train ride from Bodø. The train pulled into the station at 22:13. The area around the train station is in construction so although the hotel was 5 minutes away it took us some time to get through the mud and find our bearings. Continue reading “Trondheim”

From Bodø to Trondheim by train

Storyline: Scandinavia

Tue, Jun 17

The-Norland-Railway (Norlandsbanen) runs from the town of Bodø about 100-kilometers above the Arctic Circle to the historic city of Trondheim about 350-kilometers to the south. Usually referenced as Trondheim to Bodø this 729-kilometer-long railway is one of the most spectacular in Norway. Continue reading “From Bodø to Trondheim by train”

Bodø

Storyline: Scandinavia

Mon, Jun 16

From our most northern point we now turn south. Since we don’t have unlimited time to roam in Norway, I’ve booked a flight with SAS to Bodø. First of two. After breakfast and packing we take a cab to Tromsø airport. Continue reading “Bodø”

Tromsø

Storyline: Scandinavia

We are in Tromsø. Still Sat, Jun 14. At 69.65° it is about 660km longitudinal north of Iqaluit, Canada, and 340km north of the Arctic Circle. Its centre is located on the island of Tromsøya (Tromsø island) and is connected to the mainland Tromsøbrua, by a kilometre-long bridge Continue reading “Tromsø”

Narvik to Tromsø on bus 100

Storyline: Scandinavia

Sat, Jun 14

Moving further north day. Not that we are not north, but today we’ll take a bus all the way to Tromsø. The farthest north I’ll likely ever be. There was a time we dreamt to ship our van (now long time gone) and drive all the way to the North Cape, Europe’s most northern point at about 71° and some 470km north of the Arctic Circle. Continue reading “Narvik to Tromsø on bus 100”

Narvik, Norway

Storyline: Scandinavia

Fri, Jun 13

And so late last night we checked in Scandic hotel, Narvik. As the previous two posts covered, we had to part with my dream to cross the arctic circle by train. As far as we understood from various conversations, due to a mud slide the tracks were damaged somewhere after Gällivare. Continue reading “Narvik, Norway”

Will we cross the border toady?

Storyline: Scandinavia

And so, after all the confusion and scramble to understand what was going on, as the previous post says, our arctic circle train was replaced by a bus. To Gällivare (pronounced something like Yēllivarey. I could never quite get it right – A) so far. Continue reading “Will we cross the border toady?”

Off to Norway

Storyline: Scandinavia

Thus, Jun 12

It is about seven hours from Boden, Sweden to Narvik, Norway by train. The longest seven hours we had travelling, as we’d soon find out. Although we may have not travelled as extensively as many, our trips, except two short ones in the past, are self organised. Thus, we are on our own if something goes wrong. Continue reading “Off to Norway”

Boden, Sweden

Storyline: Scandinavia

Wed, Jun 11

Shortly after we left Stockholm we were already north of 60°. Boden (around 66°), (“a drab little place”, the train attendant told us), is a former military town located in northern Sweden, some 80 kilometres south of the arctic circle and about 220km latitudinal north of Iqaluit, Canada. Continue reading “Boden, Sweden”
