A day trip to Sintra

Storyline: Portugal by trains

Sintra is a whimsical, fairy tale city with gothic architecture, castles, mansions and villas perched on steep hills. We walked to every place we visited and some more as you know from our previous posts. Continue reading “A day trip to Sintra”

Sintra

A post on our visit to Sintra in January is still to come. Here is Alex’s focus on Quinta da Regaleira with its Initiation Wells, and Pena Palace. We definitely had a good workout hiking up to the Palace. But busses, shuttles and tuk-tuks are readily available.

Porto on a plate

Storyline: Portugal by trains

This rye bread was out of the world! It was very hearty and lasted us the entire week in Porto. One slice each was enough with the breakfast. Continue reading “Porto on a plate”

Lagos

Alex’s v-log on our second week in the Algarve. The only time in Portugal we had rain was in Lagos. Continue reading “Lagos”

Porto – first impressions

Storyline: Portugal by trains

The days being short at that time of the year, it was already dusk when we arrived in Porto. Continue reading “Porto – first impressions”

Lisbon on a fork

Storyline: Portugal by trains

(Or in a glass for that matter)

These series wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t touch on our modest experience with the food and drinks in Lisbon, although Porto is even more exciting and well known for its food scene. Continue reading “Lisbon on a fork”

Lisbon on foot

Storyline: Portugal by trains

Time for exploration of the city known for its renaissance navigators and explorers.  We walked everywhere, steep hills and miradouros (viewpoints/lookouts). Continue reading “Lisbon on foot”

Lisbon – first encounter

Storyline: Portugal by trains

It was time to take a train to Lisbon. Two actually, since there is no direct train from Lagos. We left Lagos fairly early, taking an Uber to the train station. Continue reading “Lisbon – first encounter”

Faro and Tavira

We’ve been home for a few days now and it feels like ages since we started our trip a month ago with Faro as a first stop.  Alex’s short v-log covers our first week in Algarve. With its mild January climate, I wish we were still there.

Lagos, Algarve

Storyline: Portugal by trains

Jan 14 – Jan 18

There is a lot going on for Lagos. It has a beautiful old city centre (downtown for the North Americans and yes it was downhill from where we stayed), sunny beaches for every taste, Continue reading “Lagos, Algarve”

A day in Porto

After a full sunny day walking around Porto and sampling port, sangria and plentiful Portuguese food, we were ready for a relaxing evening, Continue reading “A day in Porto”

The final trail of our Sintra adventure

Storyline: Portugal by trains

Tue, Jan 24

(this post jumped the queue)

As everywhere here, a swirl of tuk-tuk drivers surrounded the site’s exit vying for a tired tourist. It wasn’t the main entrance/exit so no buses or taxis to compete with them. Continue reading “The final trail of our Sintra adventure”

A day trip to Tavira, Algarve

Storyline: Portugal by trains

Thu, Jan 12

If we want to stay for a few winter months in the Algarve it would be the small city of Tavira. It is only half an hour away by train including all the stops east of Faro. Continue reading “A day trip to Tavira, Algarve”

Faro, Algarve

Storyline: Portugal by trains

Tue, Jan 10

Last night we dragged or carry-ons through the beautiful streets of Faro in the dark without noticing much but the Xmas lights decorating some streets in the center. Continue reading “Faro, Algarve”

In the air

A very short version of Alex’s flight interpretation. It’s over 10 days now and he has taken lots of videos, but most will be finalized at home.
